The Power of Music Videos

August 25, 2013 | Eric

I have always strongly believed in the importance of album art. For me, it can set the mood for an album even before my first listen. People I collaborate with on music projects know how much time I spend making sure the album art projects the feelings and images that I want to play through people’s minds as they listen to my music. As for music videos, I always thought they were some way for artists to promote their songs or just to make for fun. Most that I’ve I’ve seen lately are just shots of the bands playing the song and don’t really bring anything new to the song. An outlier would be Coldplay, who always puts very interesting music videos together. Lately, I’ve had a very different music video experience, a video has actually changed they way I think about the song.

A couple weeks ago, I attended the red carpet premiere of the 48 hour film I was involved with, “The Interpreter.” There was a guy, Ali Sarijlou, laying down some beats while we waited for the film to start who called himself Heart Pharmacy. Any time I hear about a local artist, I like to check out their music and see what they have going on. I found his music on Spotify, which was surprisingly acoustic, but wasn’t really feeling it right away. I then went to his website and watched one of his videos, and it completely change my mind about his song “Forever”. Its a really well done video that I think plays awesomely with the lyrics. In “Forever”, Ali sings about leaving a girl because of not liking some things she was involved in. The video, which is more like a short film, depicts a man who saves his girl from the death penalty after killing a lover. For me, it brought a whole new meaning to the lyrics, especially the lines “I’ll be without you forever” and “unlike you, I’d like to think I’m not affiliated with the people you’ve been hanging around.” Needless to say, I had the song stuck in my head for weeks. I hope you enjoy the song and video!
