“From One Cold Town to Another…”

February 4, 2014 | Eric

Around this time of year, I always find my self remembering the many Michigan winters I’ve been through. Right now its easy for me to say I miss the snow, but the way this winter is going in Michigan, I think even I would be tired of the cold by now.

I thought I would share a little story about my last winter in Ann Arbor. During that time, I wasn’t sure where I was going to end up, and the uncertainty had me writing like crazy. By the time the snow was melting, I had written a full album’s worth of material for an album that I hoped to record someday. It was bursting with winter imagery and solemn melodies, and I couldn’t wait to get moving with it. The only problem was that it was finally turning to spring, and I just didn’t feel the same way about the songs once the temperatures came back up above freezing. Also, I had another major problem, I didn’t have the album art! The thing about Michigan is that it always snows one more time after you think its done, and good ‘ole Michigan didn’t fail me that year. One day, we got a huge snowstorm and I knew it was may chance to get my winter pics I needed. My friend Mike Friedman had just gotten a nice DSLR and was eager to take some pics, so I was in luck. We hopped in my trusty jeep, put it in 4-wheel drive, and drove around town looking for good photo ops. We started by taking shots while driving to get ideas and then when we got something we liked, we found somewhere to park nearby and captured more of the wintery awesomeness.

Once we were done, I looked through all the pictures and picked out my favorites. One of my favorite pictures was taken at the cube near the Union. I chose that picture to be the album cover for my EP, “Short Walks in Ann Arbor.” My favorite picture out of all of them ended up being one of the first pictures we took right out of my Jeep! You can see part of that picture as the background of my website now.

With that, I leave you with the opening line of the album, “From One Cold Town to Another…” Maybe someday soon this album will become more than some handwritten songs in a notebook.
